Work on the regulation of the Tara riverbed has begun, leading experts in the field of ecology have been consulted

In the part below the Mateševo loop in the direction of the slope towards the toll ramp, Tara has already undermined and carried away a part of the previously built concrete embankment. Completion of the works is planned for the end of November of the current year, weather permitting

The company Bemax has started work on the regulation of the Tara River – a reconstruction project as a subcontractor to the main contractor, the Chinese company CRBC.

The works were started by the Bemax company on September 18, and are being carried out in accordance with the revised master project approved by the State Audit Commission.

“The Bemax company did not carry out work on coastal fortifications that had already been built, so this reconstruction project includes works on the rehabilitation of already built coastal fortifications, as well as the construction of new ones in places where this is foreseen in the project,” Bemax technical director Milo Muhadinović explains to Portal Analitika.

According to him, the rehabilitation is taking place on the left bank of the Tara River in a length of 960 meters as well as on the right bank in a length of 750 meters, which represents a total of 1.70 km of rehabilitation.

“Tara, in the part below the Mateševo interchange in the direction of the slope towards the Mateševo toll plaza, has already undermined and carried away a part of the previously constructed concrete embankment, and there is a danger that further undermining will lead to subsidence of the terrain and the traffic road above this part”, explains Muhadinović.

As Portal Analitika’s interlocutor adds, the works are also being carried out to prevent possible further damage to the facilities in the highway.

According to Muhadinović, the works in question cannot be carried out in any other way than to enter the riverbed, and for this reason, and with the aim of minimizing the damage to the environment and thus to the Tara River as much as possible, the Bemax company consulted leading experts in the field ecology.

“They advised us that, if they have to be carried out, and they have to according to the project and for the reason of preventing further undermining of buildings and rehabilitating parts that the river has already undermined, it would be best if these works were carried out during the lowest possible water levels of the Tara River when most of the riverbeds are in a dry state for a long period of time, and the least possible damage would be caused by the operation of machines along the river banks”, notes Muhadinović.

This, as he explains, is the main reason why they started the works now, in order to finish everything before the rainy season.

“After raising the river level, Tara will reshape its bed itself in accordance with the hydrodynamic regime of the flow in this zone. The completion of the works is planned for the end of November of the current year, if the weather conditions allow it”, concludes Muhadinović.
